Whoever coined the phrase "heart of gold" had Summerisle in mind. If Summer is prone to bouts of depression because of his condition, no one knows about them. While he doesn't necessarily keep a "sunny" disposition, he is still kind and friendly. He knows that it doesn't behoove him to be sour or snappy to others; he already has so much stacked against him that his personality doesn't need to add more to the pile.
Summer, ironically, adores hatchling Schattarneki and other young dragons. At first, the younglings generally don't know what to make of the creature that looks like one of them but speaks and acts like a grown-up, but they soon realize that he seems to understand them strangely well, and they find it easier to relate to someone more their size!
What no one knows is that Summer is sitting on a mental volcano of anger. It is a slumbering thing, and has never erupted, and for the most part he keeps it squashed so far down in his subconscious that he doesn't even realize it's there. The existence of this anger is not necessarily a flaw, but what he does to avoid thinking about his anger is absolutely an issue. Summer has to stay busy, constantly. He abhors "downtime" and never just "sits around and thinks". He likes to be doing something, anything, until he finally is so exhausted at night that he can flop over and fall asleep immediately. Whether the activity is something as simple as reading or as complex as assisting Kaere in her labs, Summer constantly distracts himself during his waking hours. It's an avoidant, escapist way of life, and perhaps someday it will all crash down on Summer like a wall of bricks. Unless he can find someone who understands him well enough so that he can finally open up to them and tell them everything, the threat of mental collapse due to physical exhaustion is ever-present.

| History:
|
Outwardly, at first glance, Summerisle does not appear to be unusual at all. Perhaps a bit on the small side for a hatchling... but the moment he opens his mouth and speaks, anyone present realizes that Summer is not a hatchling at all. He is, in fact, well into adulthood for a Schattarneki. His eyes also give him away, as they contain a lifetime of the accumulated trappings of existence: knowledge, wisdom, and pain.
He was born from a slightly undersized egg -- although such odd-sized eggs are not necessarily uncommon and do not always contain genetically unsound or damaged hatchlings. The first indication of trouble was immediately following his hatching - he was unable to be Bonded. Although several other dragons and humanoids approached him at birth and attempted to make him their Bond, Summerisle was unable to make the connection back. Some well-meaning residents of Splintyr attempted to try to Bond with him over the next few weeks, thinking perhaps he was just a late bloomer, but he remained un-Bondable.
Eventually everyone gave up trying, and Summer found himself very lonely. He grew, physically, until he was several months old, when his progress simply... stopped. He watched his siblings and peers gain their adult size and weight -- and, more importantly, grow out their wings -- while he himself simply seemed to be physically paused forever as a hatchling.
Summer was at first ostracized, and then abandoned, by his family (which is why his name is unconventional and untraditional; Summer either does not remember his given Schattarneki name or will not tell it to anyone). Most Schattarneki and other dragons do not take him entirely seriously because he looks like a gangly, airheaded hatchling. Even Schattarneki who speak with him and befriend him will occasionally still treat him like a hatchling - while they mean no insult, it's written into their instincts that someone who looks like a hatchling IS a hatchling.
Kaere attempted to assist the unfortunate dragon by first subjecting him to a barrage of genetic tests, in which she ascertained that Summer has a very rare, non-hereditary deformity in his genes, which is similar to Neotenic complex syndrome/Syndrome X or Silver–Russell syndrome, both of which affect humans only.
Due to the limits of Kaere's available technology and skill, she was unable to provide a cure or "gene therapy" for Summerisle. Incidentally, she did discover that Summer, although permanently stunted in his physical growth, was still fertile and physically capable of siring offspring. (Apparently THAT part of him matured when the rest of his body didn't.) However, this knowledge did not necessarily hearten Summer - what full-sized, mature, flight-capable female Schattarneki would want a child-sized, wingless, abnormal dragon as the father of her hatchlings?
Kaere also discovered that Summerisle is not incapable of Bonding. He simply has to be the one to initiate the Bond. So, he can be the Bonder, just not the Bondee. At first Summer was confused about the distinction between the two terms, but then Kaere explained that it was like being a human dragonrider with a bonded-dragon mount: in his case, he would be the rider, not the ridden. |
